When To Buy Cake Decorations
If someone wants to consider themselves a real expert at cake decoration, is it ever acceptable for them to buy cake decorations? Absolutely! Most of the well-known and successful professional cake decorators will make a habit of purchasing a large range of their decorations to have on hand. Not only can these materials save a bit of time and money, but they can also help the decorator to achieve their personal vision easily as well.
Consider that anyone who does high-quality cake decorating on a frequent or regular basis will also make a point of doing the following things in advance of any project:
· They will determine the right cake base and icings to use together to get the best results;
· They will know the right ways to prepare the cake base in order to get a good base of icing or fondant; and
· They will always have a decorating scheme or plan in mind before beginning any of the decorative work.
This means that most decorators have a sort of personal style or look to most of their work, but it can also mean that there are times when they want to find a way to streamline the decorating process while still maintaining their “look” as well. Pre-purchased decorations are often a way of accomplishing this dual goal.
Need an example? Let’s say that a decorator wants to use a very moist and fluffy cake mix as their cake base. They know that this is not going to be the type of cake to stand up to a lot of heavy icings and ornamentation, but they did want the finished cake to have a somewhat elaborate look. Their normal style is to make fondant accents by hand, and then position on the cake, but this just cannot work with the cake selected. How to solve the dilemma? They can turn to pre-made decorations such as lightweight picks or edible glitters that can give them the sort of fanciful treatment they desire, while also putting little to no additional weight atop the cake.
Often, this option will mean that a heavier frosting can still be used because the decorative features are so light in weight.
It is interesting to note that using pre-purchased cake decorations can also greatly expand a decorator’s options as well. Just consider the baker who needs to make a cake for a traditional Super Bowl party. Sure, they could make a football shaped cake, but wouldn’t it be more appealing and useful to make a large number of decorated cupcakes instead. Naturally, this means that the football shape is out of the question, but how do you easily and affordably decorate dozens and dozens of cupcakes for such an event? You purchase cake decorations in the appropriate theme. There are lightweight picks using football helmets, team logos, and more. You can also find fun stencils, miniature players, and candy footballs for such times too. Clearly, it is in the best interest of any cake decorator to consider the use of pre-made decorations in order to expand their options and save tons of time!
