Color is not the only part of this wedding fashion change as more women are renting designer dresses rather than buying a gown that they will only wear once, if they are lucky. Some women believe it is a waste to buy a gown they will have to have dry-cleaned every couple of years just to put it right back into storage. They envision pulling out the dress when their daughters are ready for marriage only to have them stick out their tongues, roll their eyes, and scream “yuck.” Fashions has changed so often and so dramatically over the last fifty years that the odds of your wedding dress being wearable in twenty or so years are pretty slim. Our great grandmothers would roll over in their graves if they could see some of the low-cut, backless, sleeveless, and mini-short gowns being worn today.
When we think of weddings and wedding traditions, in our mind’s eye, many of us see the blushing bride in white, happy people throwing rice, and huge, four and five tier wedding cakes. This is still what you would find at most weddings; however, the last few years have brought on some dramatic changes in many wedding planners criteria for what a traditional wedding should be. The white flowing gown and train is not necessarily the norm anymore. Brides are now opting for designer dresses in any variety of colors, styles, and sometimes, outrageousness. How many people were shocked when a certain celebrity got married in a dress made of nothing but flowers?
The wedding cake is no longer an untouchable tradition either. It used to be that the cake would be big enough so that two hundred guests would get a thin slice or at least a taste. The smart money in today’s wedding may now opt for a small cake to be placed at each table and one symbolic cake with which the happy couple can take pictures. Some planners are even going with cupcakes or a dessert buffet and a single small cake for the bride and groom to slice. With so many caterers incorporating a wide variety if desserts with the meal it seems unreasonable to also have a huge cake, although many will still have a small one with the statue of the bride and groom on top.
Anther item that has changed over the years are the gifts we give our attending guests. Las Vegas wedding favors that are themed and come with gambling chips or pictures of Elvis are a far cry from the wedding favors of old. Since wedding are becoming more fun to participate in, they might as well be more fun to attend as well. Wedding planners know the trend to theme the wedding after a popular person or event will be here for a while and are adapting quickly. So how far down the road are weddings whose participants paint their bodies blue and attend as their favorite Avatar characters? A good be would be that it is already here and here to stay.
When planning your own wedding, your choices are now a hundredfold vaster than even your mother’s wedding. The white wedding cake with sugar fluff frosting and pink rosettes, while pretty, is no longer your only option. Baking techniques and abilities have advanced to the point that you can have a cake in the form and shape of almost anything, or anyone, and be in almost any flavor that you can imagine. The next time you attend a wedding, do not be surprised if your piece of cake comes from the nose of a space shuttle or the leg of a Twilight vampire, if you get a piece of cake at all.
